For this music magazine, I wanted to create a product that resonates with a niche following for a specific type of music that is categorised as Vocaloid. Vocaloids are vocal synthesisers that have many voice banks for people to buy and use to create their own songs or covers. This is the reasoning behind my idea to create a Vocaloid magazine, the target audiences age is quite a varied one as it ranges from 9-30 as it’s fanbase is huge, however this target audience are mostly stereotypically, individuals who have neurological disabilities. In terms of categorising this fan base I would say that it is a part of the alt community specifically apart of the superfan, cosplayer, hard gamer and geek community as they all have things that overlap with their love for Japanese mediums. The actual target audience when looking at who listens to it gender wise is quite broad as both male and females listen to it, however I would argue that there is more of a female audience due to the overall design of the characters. I plan for my magazine to provide a platform for this wide audience to have access to the latest news from one place instead of from multiple sources from online.
To target the wide demographic, I wanted to mainly focus on the characters when it comes to the imagery being portrayed. The characters themselves have key features however the overall art style can be vastly different to the source material, which I believe gives me a lot to works with in terms of how I want to portray them. I believe that the two front covers should have the one of the characters I believe that the last one should be of Hatsune Miku the most popular Vocaloid in the world, due to going to Miku Expo which is a concert that I went to get footage and pictures. When it comes to the colour scheme of the magazine, I want it to incorporate the colour scheme of the main six Vocaloids so if the main image is one of them the main headline and the first letter of the masthead will have the same colour that is associated with that character. When it comes to the background colours, I believe that it will be best if I go for light pastel colours that complement the main image, this will also allow me to use black text which will work with the overall contrast and will be readable against the main imagery. This also then would relate to the target audience as people that listen, play or watch Vocaloids will know that they are quite ‘Kawai’ with their overall looks which makes them appeal to the target audience.
With the overall house style of this magazine, I want to present the magazine in a modern way to pay homage to Vocaloid and its roots, as it aimed to be revolutionary at the time of its creation. As for the content pages I want it to be a double page spread so I could have pictures on the right and information on the left, I think that this would be the best way to present the content due to the fact people read from left to right, so it makes sense for the main info to be on the left. I want the images to be of the main 6 as it is the main focus of the magazine but also it could link to the main article, or it could link to the main image of the front cover interterms of what they wear.
I believe that a website is needed for this music magazine especially when it comes to the content that this is based on. When thinking about the magazine and newspaper industry in the sense of circulation of physical copy, there is less people buying them due to the information coming out in a matter of seconds online in comparison to it coming out a week or month later via a physical print. Therefore, it would make sense to have a website to keep people up to date with the latest information as it releases. When linking the physical product to the website I believe that the website should take a on darker appearance in comparison to the physical magazine due to many people wanting things to go easier on the eyes, as darker colours don’t emit to much light in comparison to light or brighter colours on devise, paper on the other hand doesn’t have the same issues. I plan for the magazine to use convergence media, such as having a QR-code, so it prompts the website, but also to have the magazine promoted on the home page of the website and also have a link page dedicated to past magazines and present magazines, to buy.
